You know the old expression – only fools rush in on Craven Week? I say old, it’s as old as this email, but we’re so far being proven mostly correct. Notebooks at Newmarket in April, goes the other old expression. But you all know that, as you’re all clever enough to sign up for RTH which means you’re clever.

So let’s start with that Craven, because y’know, it’s there. So Master of the Seas will go off favourite, but his 4/11f defeat at Meydan raises suspicions, good though he was as a 2yo, and we may have to look elsewhere. So a chance could be taken on top stallion pick Akmaam who came 5th here over a mile as a 2yo after winning on debut, and has a 3.6 stallion rating which is backed up by Jim Crowley in the saddle. Not from a top yard, but well-bred with fellow progeny doing well at 3, and tasty place money perhaps.

In the race before that at 3:00, Summerghand might be able to upset the odds-on favourite Oxted who, since having wind surgery, hasn’t been his usual self. Admittedly, there was one run at Meydan which was crap, and we don’t rate that, so his ratings are high all over – but ours flies under the radar comparatively, and is in great nick. He loves turf and has been running well on the all-weather, so deserves his opportunity today against a favourite who may perhaps not be what he was last year.

6:25 and Breguet Boy has been hurdling and now returns to Newcastle for the AW off a relatively low mark. That said, it’s hard to say what he’s truly capable of, but he’s got some historic form over this distance, he’s capable in most codes – like a centre-forward who can fill in at centre-half and full-back when required. Oh, and he’s 3 from 6 at this level. Interesting, at 7/1.

Lots of horses coming back for their first run at Ripon, not least Benadalid in the 4:00. One to watch on his reappearance perhaps, but he does like Ripon quite a lot, and if you’re going to make your comeback, make it on a track where you’re 40% over C&D. Nice. However, he takes a run or two on his historic form, so with a pinch of salt and a price of at least 10/1 for the risk.

The rest is up to you today. Good luck.
